Hazardous Materials Program

Program Description

The Illinois Fire Service Institute's Hazardous Materials program offers courses to train first responders how to respond to, identify, and properly mitigate hazardous materials/WMD incidents

Course topics include the initial isolation of the area, proper identification of the product, notifications to be made, mitigation levels and procedures, and termination of the incident. In addition, the program trains responders to work in all EPA levels of personal protective equipment, to deploy ambulatory and non-ambulatory decontamination procedures, to operate specialized monitoring equipment, and to properly use a multitude of offensive and defensive product control techniques.

All of our courses are based on OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120 and NFPA 472 Standard for Competence of Responders to Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction Incidents. Additionally, most of our courses are Department of Homeland Security and ProBoard approved. All of the traditional courses can be conducted at your department or regional training centers and most are delivered at no cost using several grant funding sources.
